Are you interested in building models and creating algorithms to power the world’s largest public cloud? EC2 is Amazon's virtual machine compute platform. Many other services are built on top of it—EC2 Spot, Lambda, the Amazon Retail website, and Netflix, to name a few. The EC2 fleet comprises millions of machines in multiple locations, and its management involves complex trade-offs between utilization and capacity availability. Many of the business problems the EC2 Capacity Research team tackles are either concerned with matching supply and demand in the short- to medium term or the detection of anomalous behavior. In a typical project, we analyze large volumes of data, and then develop a predictive machine learning, or a prescriptive optimization model, or a hybrid approach that is frequently validated in simulations. We deliver actionable business information and drive the automated processes of other teams.
As a Senior Research Scientist on the EC2 Capacity Research team, you will help lead the team in building our scientific infrastructure to apply cutting edge technologies to analyzing data and solving real business problems using machine learning and / or optimization techniques. Coaching junior scientists is an integral part of the position. Collaborating with other research scientists, software engineers, and product managers you will develop creative, novel, data-driven, approaches to improve our existing cloud offerings and define new offerings. This will require design of multivariate experiments, analyzing large quantities of data using the world's leading cloud infrastructure, communicating your results to guide the direction of the business, and working with software development teams to implement your ideas in code. You will challenge yourself and others to constantly come up with better solutions that impact the direction of the entire industry. It’s fast paced, data driven, and impactful.
The ideal candidate is expected to possess a deep expertise and set of hard skills in either statistics & machine learning or operations research and a good understanding of the fundamental concepts across both domains. Ability to write queries for data extraction and analysis is also required. Our customers are as different as the problems they would like to see solved, and the Senior Research Scientist must be able to deal with ambiguity and shifting goals. Good verbal and written communication skills are essential to be able to work with stakeholders at all levels. Above all, you should be a passionate, hard-working and creative person who loves business, loves solving difficult problems, and doesn’t mind getting involved in the details.
