Amazon Web Services is seeking a Sr. Software Engineering Manager to drive the technical vision of our world-class Safety Engineering group. We analyze trends and build software used across AWS to reduce recurrence, duration, and size of customer impacting events.

As a Sr. Manager in AWS Safety Engineering, you will lead a Seattle-based staff of engineers focused on providing AWS customers with a high-availability experience. You will drive a large-scale initiative to automate the incident and problem management process for all of AWS.


Your responsibilities will include:
- Defining the roadmap and direction of the team.
- Evolving the technical direction of the service.
- Career development of engineers on your team.
- Working closely with customers to ensure that the right products are delivered.
- Maintaining current technical knowledge to support rapidly changing technology, always on a look out for new technologies and work with the team in bringing in new technologies.

As a senior technical individual contributor you will join the ranks of a large and growing community of Amazon Principal, Senior Principal, and Distinguished Engineers. You will help establish technical standards and drive Amazon’s overall technical architecture and engineering practices. You’ll work on Amazon’s hardest problems, building high quality, architecturally sound systems that are aligned with our business needs.

You will design, architect and innovative technology solutions that will reduce time to market, standardize execution, and scale for expansion worldwide. You will be a technology visionary leader, builder, operator and play a key role in the evolution of our platform to solve the world's most complex technical challenges in Distributed systems, Web applications, Machine Learning, Scalability, Reliability and Security.

Your responsibilities will include:
- Building a world-class team of software/systems development engineers
- Defining the roadmap and direction of the team
- Delivering quality features on-time and on-budget and executing against project plans and delivery commitments.
- Career development of engineers on your team.
- Working closely with internal partners to ensure that the right products are delivered.
- Maintaining current technical knowledge to support rapidly changing technology, always on a look out for new technologies and work with the team in bringing in new technologies.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience in building and managing a team of strong technical people, and prior ownership of the operation of a mission-critical support team
  • Proven track record of success in delivering complex projects, including coordinating and driving issues to resolution autonomously utilizing excellent project management skills.
  • B.S. in Computer Science or five years equivalent experience in a large-scale enterprise environment is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience dealing with customers during problem resolution and operating under pressure.
  • Routine communication of status to executive management
  • SLA definition and refinement
  • Goal-setting for reduction and elimination of customer facing defects
  • Participation in post-mortem analysis, including ensuring a high quality bar for analysis and follow through of consequent action items
  • Passion and aptitude for data analysis
  • Experience with quantitative measurement and improvement
  • Possess a high degree of organization and be very detail-oriented
  • Must be able to interact and with and influence people at all levels
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have the ability to contribute to and support long-term visions and direction regarding tier one and tier two systems and networking support initiatives at Amazon
