Are you interested in building models and creating algorithms to power the world’s largest public cloud? EC2 is Amazon's virtual machine compute platform. Many other services are built on top of it—EC2 Spot, Lambda, the Amazon Retail website, and Netflix, to name a few. The EC2 fleet comprises millions of machines in multiple locations, and its management involves complex trade-offs between utilization and capacity availability. Many of the business problems the EC2 Capacity Research team tackles are either concerned with matching supply and demand in the short- to medium term or the detection of anomalous behavior. In a typical project, we analyze large volumes of data, and then develop a predictive machine learning, or a prescriptive optimization model, or a hybrid approach that is frequently validated in simulations. We deliver actionable business information and drive the automated processes of other teams.

A Research Scientist on this team must be comfortable working with large volumes of data and be able to manipulate data using a variety of tools. The ideal candidate possesses a good knowledge and set of hard skills across both predictive (machine learning) and prescriptive (optimization) analytics, or a deep knowledge and advanced skills in one of these two domains. Our customers are as different as the problems they would like to see solved, and the Research Scientist must be able to deal with ambiguity and shifting goals. Good verbal and written communication skills are essential.

    Basic Qualifications

    • MS or PhD in computer science, engineering, statistics, machine learning, operations research, mathematics, or in another highly quantitative field
    • Depth and breadth in state-of-the-art approaches in forecasting, planning, machine learning, or optimization
    • 2+ years of relevant academic research or industry experience in developing algorithms
    • Scientific mindset and the ability to invent
    • Excellent creative problem solving skills
    • Ability to design and develop system prototypes in simulation
    • Fluency in at least one statistical software package such as R, Matlab
    • Some experience in optimization modeling languages/environments/engines such IBM ILOG CPLEX, FICO Xpress Optimizer, Gurobi Optimizer, AMPL, GAMS
    • Some experience with SQL and programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++
    • Superior communication and data presentation skills
    • Effective working in a team environment

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Superior communication and data presentation skills
    • Demonstrated ability to lead research projects and identify fruitful research directions
    • Demonstrated ability to work on cross-functional teams
    • Experience writing production or library code
    • Understanding of big data computing frameworks (Hadoop, Spark, etc.) and Amazon Web Services
    • Experience with applying machine learning models in R/Python and/or designing and implementing integer linear programming formulations / heuristics for (combinatorial) optimization in Python/Java/C++
